The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday issued notice to the Bihar government over allegations that a nine-year-old rape victim had died at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) owing to delay in treatment. The child was reportedly kept in an ambulance for several hours for want of bed.
The sexual assault took place on May 26, and she was brought to the hospital in a critical condition on May 30.
Observing that the matter raised a serious issue of violation of human rights, the commission issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police, Bihar, seeking a detailed report in the matter within two weeks.
According to reports, the perpetrator had earlier raped a 12 year-old-girl and had attempted to kill her.
