A powerful polar vortex has transformed Niagara Falls into a frozen spectacle, with extreme cold causing the mist rising from the waterfalls to freeze into ice.

Footage circulating online shows thick ice formations along the cliffs and riverbanks as temperatures plunged below 20 degrees Celsius.

Despite the severe cold, water continued to thunder over the falls, sending dense clouds of mist into the air.

In the freezing conditions, this mist quickly turns into ice, coating nearby surfaces and creating a dramatic winter scene.

Parts of the Niagara River also appear partly frozen, with large sheets of ice visible near the edge of the falls. Adding to the striking scene, a faint rainbow can be seen forming through the mist.

About Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is one of the most famous natural wonders in the world, located on the border between Canada and the United States. It consists of three waterfalls — the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls — formed by the Niagara River as it flows from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.

The falls are known for their powerful flow and constant mist, which can be seen from miles away. Every second, millions of litres of water plunge over the cliffs, creating a thundering sound and a dramatic landscape. Niagara Falls is also a major source of hydroelectric power for both countries.

Throughout the year, the falls change with the seasons. In summer, they attract millions of visitors from around the world. In winter, extreme cold can turn the area into a frozen spectacle, with ice forming along the edges and mist freezing in the air, though the water itself never completely stops flowing.

Beyond its natural beauty, Niagara Falls holds cultural and historical importance and remains a symbol of the raw power and beauty of nature.
