The Centre of Excellence in Urban Planning and Design (CoEUPD) at the National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C), in collaboration with the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) and the Kozhikode Corporation, will conduct a workshop titled ‘Building a People-Centric Kozhikode’ for councillors at Malabar Palace on Thursday (March 5, 2026).
“This high-level strategic session is exclusively designed for councillors and senior municipal officials to strengthen their understanding of contemporary urban planning. The curriculum addresses critical local challenges, including urbanisation trends, mobility planning, local area practices, and the vital issues of wastewater and urban flood management,” P.P. Anilkumar, Professor, Department of Architecture and Planning, NIT-C, and chairman, CoEUPD, said in a statement on Wednesday.
He said that the establishment of the CoEUPD at NIT-C followed a 2022 Union Budget directive to create four national hubs for urban excellence. Following a rigorous two-year competitive selection process, NIT-C emerged as the representative for south India, joining an elite group of institutions that includes the School of Planning and Architecture Delhi, CEPT University Ahmedabad, and IIT Kharagpur.
Supported by a ₹250 crore endowment from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the CoEUPD now serves as a national hub for sustainable, data-driven, and citizen-focussed development.
By focusing on resilience and people-centric development, the one-day workshop seeks to enhance informed decision-making and empower the Corporation to steer Kozhikode towards a future that is both strategically planned and environmentally responsible.
Prof. Anilkumar, Prof. M.A. Naseer, and Prof. K. Chithra from the Department of Architecture and Planning, NIT-C, and scientists T.K. Drissia and B. Vivek from the CWRDM will handle the workshop.
