Patna: A week-long global initiative of academic networks (GIAN) course on “urban conservation and regeneration”, organised by the architecture and planning department of NIT-Patna, kicked off here on Tuesday.The GIAN course, supported by the Union ministry of education, has brought together about 70 participants, including researchers, faculty and professionals from India and abroad to engage with the latest theories and practices in urban regeneration.On the inaugural day, the event featured distinguished experts from across the globe.Ettore Maria Mazzola of the architecture and urbanism department at the University of Notre Dame, Rome (Italy), was the foreign expert on the occasion.
Mazzola explained in detail the characteristics of the Ferjaan—urban regeneration project for downtown Doha (Qatar). Joining virtually as the national expert was M Kailasa Rao, director of the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Bhopal.At the outset, GIAN course coordinator Kamini Sinha outlined the curriculum designed to equip participants with the ‘Charrette’ design process and strategies for resilient urban planning.
The course aims to bridge the gap between traditional architectural wisdom and modern urban necessities, she said.The technical session provided participants with real-world insights into successful urban regeneration projects that respect cultural history. The participants were made to learn how cities can grow economically while strictly preserving their unique cultural and historical heritage.
