Shivamogga Member of Parliament B.Y. Raghavendra on Saturday (July 5, 2025) said that the cable-stayed bridge constructed across Sharavathi backwaters in Sagar taluk will be inaugurated on July 14.
Minister for Highway Transport Nitin Gadkari will inaugurate the bridge on the day. The venue of the inaugural ceremony will be decided soon, said Mr. Raghavendra at a press conference in Shivamogga on Saturday.
The bridge, he said, had been named Holebagilu-Kalasavalli bridge on records. He would wish the bridge was named after Sigandur Chowdeshwari, the deity, whose temple at Sigandur attracts devotees from different places.
Mr. Raghavendra appealed to the State Government to send a proposal to the Centre on naming the bridge after the deity.
The bridge has been constructed at a cost ₹450 crores to benefit people in the island spread over Barangi and Karuru hoblis of Sagar taluk.
Following the construction of Linganmakki Dam for generation of power, many villages were submerged and similarly many lost road connectivity.
All these years the people were dependent on ferries to cross the backwaters. The bridge is expected to end their transportation woes.
