Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Nitesh Rane on Sunday called on Netflix to reconsider featuring Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman on the latest episode of ‘The Great Indian Kapil Sharma Show‘, following controversy over his recent remarks on the Hindi film industry.
Rane, writing on X, said Rahman’s comments had hurt “the sentiments of India, history, and Hindu society".
“When it comes to comedy, the name Kapil Sharma comes to mind, and The Great Indian Kapil Show has gained immense popularity both in India and abroad… In such a situation, we strongly oppose the decision to give him a place on such a big platform," the BJP leader wrote.
कॉमेडी की बात हो तो नाम आता है कपिल शर्मा का, और The Great Indian Kapil Show
He stressed that while freedom of entertainment was important, public feelings, national unity, and social sensitivity should take priority.
“We expect Netflix and the show’s producers to reconsider this decision and respect social sensitivity. Comedy is welcome, but there can be no compromise on India’s integrity, cultural identity, and Hindutva," he added.
The episode, released on Netflix on Sunday, marks Rahman’s first appearance on the show since last month, when he suggested that the Hindi film industry may have become more “communal" in recent years. His comments sparked a widespread debate, though he later said his intentions had been misunderstood.
Rahman appeared to promote his latest project as a composer, Kishor Pandurang Belekar’s silent film ‘Gandhi Talks‘, alongside the film’s cast, including Vijay Sethupathi, Aditi Rao Hydari and Siddharth Jadhav.
