The reported plan by a section of members of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) to move a no-confidence motion against actor Shweta Menon-led leadership has added to speculations over the outcome of the annual general body of the film fraternity forum which is taking place in Kochi amid a series of controversies surrounding it.
Reports said a section, opposing the current leadership, is planning to move the no-trust motion against the Ms. Menon-led committee citing its failure to run the day-to-day affairs of the organisation and to resolve the recent disputes between some of the members which have led to police cases.
The draft of a purported no-confidence motion, circulated among the members ahead of the meet, has sought the current administration to quit immediately and hand over the charge to an ad-hoc committee to be appointed by the general body. It said the AMMA leadership has miserably failed to ensure unity in the functioning of the association.
The document has posed four questions to the leadership. The questions pertain to not conducting an annual star show in association with a private entertainment channel, hosting a liquor partyin connection with the International Film Festival of Kerala, the failure of the association in settling the disputes between its members amicably and the decision to change the venue of the general body.
The alleged rebel section has also questioned the delay in making available the annual report and the balance sheet to the members ahead of the general body meet.
Though the election of the AMMA executive committee headed by two women at its helm, Ms. Menon as the president and actor Cuckoo Parameswaran as general secretary, was hailed as a historic feat in 2025, the leadership has since been facing multiple challenges which exposed the internal turmoil within the 32-year-old forum.
The general body meet comes amid a series of complaints involving AMMA members. While Ansiba Hassan, who quit as the joint secretary, and vice-president Lakshmipriya have filed complaints against each other, treasurer Unni Shivpal has been sent on compulsory leave following a police complaint by an employee of the association. Ms. Hassan has also filed a police complaint against actor Tiny Tom alleging defamatory and communal remarks. Executive committee member Neena Kurup has meanwhile filed a complaint against Mr. Tom to the AMMA leadership alleging “use of abusive language and attempted physical assault.”
