The suspense and deadlock in Congress over the Chief Ministerial face in Kerala continues, with the party leadership set to hold a third round of crucial discussions in Delhi today. The meeting is being seen as significant in efforts to build consensus over the next Chief Minister of Kerala.
According to sources, the Congress leadership will meet former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee presidents, current working presidents and senior party leaders. During the discussions, the leadership is expected to seek the opinion of all senior leaders on the CM face before arriving at a final decision.
Sources say the Congress leadership will hold one-on-one meetings with key leaders to understand their views as well as the political equations within the party. Only after these consultations is the party expected to take a final call on the Chief Ministerial candidate.
This comes after two earlier rounds of consultations. Congress observers had already met MLAs and senior leaders in Kerala, while a second round of discussions took place in Delhi involving Congress President Mallikarjun Khadge and Rahul Gandhi with the three main contenders for the post.
The frontrunners in the race for Kerala Chief Minister are Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly VD Satheesan and senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithallah.
Despite the UDF securing a majority under Congress leadership in Kerala, the party is yet to finalise its Chief Ministerial face. All eyes are now on today’s meeting in Delhi to see whether the Congress leadership is finally able to break the deadlock.
