A week following the alleged suicide of its chairman in Bengaluru, the Confident Group announced on Monday that it remains a zero-debt, zero-investor company and reassured customers that all ongoing projects would be completed on time.

Managing Director T A Joseph clarified that the recent Income Tax inspection at the company’s Bengaluru office was a routine procedure and that there was no “extreme harassment" by IT officials during the search.

These comments come amidst the controversy surrounding Chairman C J Roy’s alleged suicide during an IT search at the Bengaluru office on January 30. Joseph emphasised that IT officials are not adversaries but are merely implementing government regulations. He described Roy’s brother’s reaction to the IT officials as emotional and stated that the company had fully cooperated with the inspection.

Joseph addressed reporters at a press conference, reiterating that the IT inspection was a routine exercise and not based on any offence committed. He noted that the IT officials interacted with the company in a reasonable manner.

While he refrained from commenting further on Roy’s death, Joseph expressed satisfaction with the ongoing Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe. He highlighted that the company’s operations are funded solely through sales collections, underlining its zero-debt, zero-investor status, and invited anyone to verify this claim.

In response to queries about whether Malayalam superstar Mohanlal or producer Antony Perumbavoor had invested in the company, Joseph dismissed these claims as unfounded. He explained that their association with Mohanlal and Perumbavoor was limited to the film Casanova and that they shared a strong bond with Roy as family friends.

Joseph criticised a section of online channels for spreading false stories about the company and Roy’s death. He denied allegations of benami transactions or any wrongdoing by the company and questioned what misconduct the deceased chairman could have committed.

Joseph assured customers that all projects would be completed on time and reported that work on all sites had resumed fully following the chairman’s death.

C J Roy, the founder and chairman of the Confident Group, allegedly died by suicide on January 30 due to bullet injuries from his licensed firearm at his office near Richmond Circle in Bengaluru. The incident occurred while a team of Income Tax officials from Kerala was questioning him, following searches conducted over the previous three days. Roy had been under the Income Tax department’s scrutiny since December last year, when his office and other premises were searched.
