No move to privatize mineral sand mining, says Kerala industries minister Kunhalikutty

Kozhikode: Industries minister P K Kunhalikutty said on Saturday that matters such as the PM Shri scheme reached before the current govt after the process moved far along.“It reached us after travelling kilometres, and no one can just place that blame on a govt that was sworn in barely a month ago.

They trapped us in PM Shri. The opposition leader admitted in the assembly that they signed it for the funds.

Right now the situation is that the funds were accepted and used. Now, we have appointed a committee to see what can be done,” Kunhalikutty said.He added that there is not even a move to privatise rare earth mining. “What needs to be understood is that mineral sand cannot be privatised as it is reserved for public sector.

We will not permit it even if there are any loopholes for private involvement or fresh mining,” Kunhalikutty added. He added that they will carefully study whatever happened in the time of previous govt on the subject. “Matter of signing an MoU came up before us in the meantime and we have not agreed to it,” said Kunhalikutty. He added that regarding liquor policy there is a clarity on the UDF’s stand and they will talk about it after discussions within the front.

Kunhalikutty also addressed the controversy regarding chief minister V D Satheesan’s off-the-record remarks in the assembly regarding a request from Kuttanad MLA for a regional holiday relating to the Champakulam Moolam boat race. The CM’s official response was that the govt would consider it but soon after sitting down the microphone captured him saying that it will not be granted under any circumstances. The video quickly went viral.Kunhalikutty said that from what he remembers, Satheesan was speaking to him after sitting down about an unrelated matter. He said that he and Satheesan were talking about another matter when he stood up to respond to the question. He said that as per his memory, he was continuing the discussion after sitting down and it was relating to another subject.
