Jennifer Nettles says one of the most memorable moments of this year had little to do with music and everything to do with witnessing two close friends celebrate a milestone together.
Speaking after attending Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's widely discussed Madison Square Garden wedding, the Sugarland singer looked back on the ceremony with genuine appreciation, describing it as a privilege to witness such a personal chapter in the couple's lives. Nettles, who has shared a professional connection with Swift for years, said the invitation itself came as a surprise, making the experience even more meaningful.
Why did Jennifer Nettles say attending Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding meant so much?
Nettles shared her thoughts while speaking exclusively to PEOPLE on July 10 during the opening night of her off-Broadway musical, Giulia: The Poison Queen of Palermo. Rather than focusing on the celebrity-filled guest list, she spoke about the significance of watching two people at the height of their careers celebrate a deeply personal moment.“To be a part of even a small part of their story for me was super special because, obviously, these are two people who are at the absolute top of their industry, the top of their game, the top of their craft, the top of their artistry,” Nettles says.
“It’s such an important time in their lives. To be able to witness that very special moment, it’s beautiful.”Jennifer Nettles and Taylor Swift have known each other for years and previously teamed up on Sugarland's 2018 song Babe. Even with that long-standing relationship, the 51-year-old admitted she never expected to receive an invitation to the highly private ceremony.“It all surprised me, because of course, no one knew anything,” she explains of the wedding.
“I guess people had — there were leaks here and there where people were guessing, but no one knew for sure where we were going until much closer to the time.”The ceremony eventually brought together around 1,000 guests inside New York City's Madison Square Garden. Friends, family members and many well-known figures gathered as Swift and Kelce each spent about 20 minutes reading vows from gold books. Adam Sandler officiated the wedding, while Swift's brother Austin served as her man of honor and Kelce's brother Jason stood beside him as best man.Looking back, Nettles said the event carried added meaning because of the admiration she has built for Swift over the years, both personally and professionally.“I’m so proud to have been even a little part of her story,” Nettles emphasizes. “Obviously, throughout her history, she and I have worked together before, and I have such an admiration for her and what she has done.”She also praised Swift's songwriting ability without hesitation.“As a songwriter, you can’t touch her,” she adds. “She’s the biggest artist of all time, really of our generation.”Nettles' comments also echoed sentiments she shared long before the wedding took place. In February 2024, she spoke warmly about Swift and Kelce's relationship shortly after the couple began dating in the summer of 2023.“Taylor is such a lovely human being, and I want her to find love just like everybody else,” she said at the time. “I am invested in that for her.”
