The probe into the death of 26-year-old Nikki Bhati has taken a new turn after CCTV footage, reported by The Times of India, purportedly showed her husband and prime accused, Vipin Bhati, standing outside a grocery shop near their Greater Noida home on August 21, the day she was allegedly attacked.

According to the report, the clip from a store opposite the Bhati residence in Sirsa village has led police to re-examine the sequence of events and review the assault videos shared by Nikki’s family.

Nikki’s sister Kanchan, married to Vipin’s younger brother Rohit and living in the same house, recorded those clips, including one that allegedly shows Nikki stumbling down the stairs with her body engulfed in flames.

Citing police sources, The Times of India reported that the timestamp on the CCTV clip showing Vipin with his six-year-old son on the road places him at the grocery shop around 5.45 pm, the same time Nikki’s family claims she was set ablaze, as seen in a video recorded by her sister Kanchan.

According to the report, the CCTV footage shows Vipin in a check shirt and blue trousers standing near a white car outside his residence. A boy is seen tugging at a rope near him several times before, at 5:47 pm, some commotion breaks out and Vipin rushes towards the house, followed by an elderly man. The report adds that moments later, Vipin emerges again and gestures for others to join him. As the crowd swells, he is seen speaking to a man in shorts. At 5:48 pm, Vipin briefly sits inside the car, then drives it back to the street, where more people are visible.

Vipin’s cousin, Devendra, has commented on the chaos seen in the footage, claiming that Nikki died due to a cylinder blast in the kitchen.

“I heard Vipin shouting to take Nikki to the hospital. Everyone was shouting that Nikki has been injured in the fire. In the footage, you can see me coming out of my shop in shorts. I lowered the shutter and started the car. Along with uncle and aunty (Daya and Satveer), I took Nikki to the hospital. She told us there was a cylinder blast inside the house and she was asking for water on the way because she was having trouble breathing. We took her to Fortis Hospital, where she also told the doctor about the cylinder blast," Devendra was quoted as saying in The Times of India report.

A senior police officer, quoted in the report, said the timing of Kanchan’s video and the CCTV footage will be closely examined. “We will investigate certain aspects, particularly the time frame. The authenticity of the CCTV footage and the video submitted by Kanchan is also under scrutiny. In addition, footage from the hospital where Nikki was first taken will be reviewed," the officer told the publication.

The police on Monday arrested Vipin’s father, Satveer, and his younger brother, Rohit, who had been on the run since the alleged killing. On Sunday, police apprehended Vipin along with his mother, Daya. During a visit to the crime scene, Vipin allegedly attempted to escape custody and was shot in the leg in an encounter.
