Iran did not use its nuclear programme against the United States (US) in the ongoing conflict, but what it opted for instead proved to be the most powerful warhead, pushing the superpower on the defensive.
What was it? How did it give Iran the leverage? News18 explains.
Iran’s most powerful weapon
Analysis by experts and news outlets suggests that Iran’s most potent deterrent is no longer just its uranium enrichment programme, but its demonstrated capacity to paralyse global energy markets through a new weapon — the Strait of Hormuz.
How it helps
By threatening to close this critical oil route, Iran exerts pressure similar to nuclear deterrence, knowing that a full closure would cause “disastrous" global oil price spikes.
Iran has shifted from direct military engagement to a war of attrition using swarms of small attack craft, anti-ship missiles, and drones.
While Iran’s actual nuclear material (roughly 440kg of enriched uranium) is currently buried in facilities damaged by US strikes, Trump has referred to this as “nuclear dust" and demanded its total surrender, while Iran maintains its right to peaceful nuclear technology.
How US is fighting this “weapon"?
The Trump administration is currently adapting its regional policy to counter this leverage while a precarious ceasefire is in place.
On April 21, Trump announced an indefinite extension of the truce with Iran to allow for a new round of peace talks in Pakistan.
The US is considering making its massive naval and air deployments (including multiple aircraft carriers) a permanent feature of CENTCOM to ensure “safe passage" through the Strait.

A key US objective is the physical extraction of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile. Trump has signaled a willingness to use “big machinery" to excavate these materials once a deal is reached.
Despite the ceasefire, the U.S. maintains a naval blockade of Iranian ports to “choke off" economic lifelines until a final nuclear agreement is signed.
The US naval blockade in Hormuz
THe United States is maintaining a naval blockade targeting ships entering or leaving Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. The operation, managed by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), was formally imposed on April 13, following the collapse of peace talks in Islamabad.
The blockade applies exclusively to vessels docking at or departing from Iranian ports; the U.S. states it does not impede freedom of navigation for other commercial traffic. U.S. forces have intercepted at least 25 vessels as of late April.
What is Iran’s nuclear status?
While the ‘Strait’ is the immediate tactical weapon, Iran’s actual nuclear program remains at a critical threshold:
Iran is estimated to hold about 440kg of 60% enriched uranium. Experts believe this is enough to produce multiple bombs if enriched further to 90%.
Following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes in February 2026 (Operation Epic Fury), key sites like Natanz and Isfahan suffered damage, but Iran has reportedly moved its uranium stockpiles to secure underground locations.
Iran has suspended IAEA inspections at damaged sites, stating that normal safeguards are “legally untenable" following military aggression.
KEY FAQs
What is Iran’s most powerful weapon in this war?
It is the Strait of Hormuz—a narrow sea route through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil passes, giving Iran massive leverage over global energy flows.
How does Iran use it as a weapon?
Iran doesn’t need to fully block it—even the threat or partial disruption of tanker traffic can spike oil prices, disrupt supply chains, and pressure global economies, especially the U.S. and its allies.
Why is this more powerful than military force?
Because it’s asymmetric leverage: Iran may not match U.S. military strength, but by controlling a critical chokepoint, it can create global economic shock and gain bargaining power without direct confrontation.
