Joey Barton continues to make the headlines for the worst of reasons.

The notorious former Premier League midfielder has reportedly been arrested following an alleged assault near a golf club in Huyton, Merseyside, United Kingdom.

According to a report by the BBC, Barton is believed to be one of two men detained by police after the incident on Sunday night.

Police Investigation

Merseyside Police confirmed that officers were called to reports of an assault at around 9 pm on March 8 near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.

Authorities said a man was attacked and later taken to the hospital with injuries to his face and ribs.

Police stated that a 50-year-old man and a 43-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding, which relates to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Arrest Revealed During Court Hearing

The news of Barton’s arrest emerged during a High Court hearing on Tuesday involving a libel case between Barton and former Eni Aluko.

During the proceedings, barrister Gervase de Wilde told the court that his solicitor had received a call from a duty solicitor at a Liverpool police station.

“He was arrested yesterday and is currently being held in custody," de Wilde said in court.

Long Career — and Long History of Controversy

Barton enjoyed a lengthy professional career spanning 14 years, making 269 appearances in the Premier League, including 130 games for Manchester City.

He also played for clubs such as:

  • Newcastle United
  • Queens Park Rangers
  • Burnley FC
  • Rangers FC

After retiring, he moved into management, taking charge of Fleetwood Town and later Bristol Rovers.

However, Barton has frequently made headlines for controversies off the pitch.

Previous Legal Issues

Earlier this year, Barton received a six-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months over grossly offensive social media posts directed at broadcaster Jeremy Vine, as well as pundits Lucy Ward and Eni Aluko.

He has also faced multiple court appearances in the past, including a conviction for assaulting his wife and a civil libel case in 2024 in which he was ordered to pay damages to Vine.
