Novak Djokovic withdraws from Madrid Open with injury concerns, raising doubts ahead of Roland Garros as both he and Carlos Alcaraz race to regain fitness.

It’s not looking great for Novak Djokovic as the clay season heats up.

The Serbian legend has officially withdrawn from the Madrid Open, casting fresh doubt over his readiness for the looming French Open.

“Madrid, unfortunately I won’t be able to compete this year. I’m continuing my recovery in order to be back soon. Hasta pronto!" Djokovic wrote on X.

Injury Troubles Continue

The 24-time Grand Slam champion hasn’t played since his fourth-round exit at the Indian Wells Masters, where he was beaten by Jack Draper.

Since then, a lingering shoulder injury has forced him to skip multiple tournaments, including Miami and Monte Carlo.

At 38, the physical toll is beginning to show. Djokovic’s 7-2 record and his absence from key clay events leave him short on match rhythm heading into the business end of the season.

A Rocky Road To No. 25

Djokovic’s pursuit of a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title has hit repeated roadblocks lately. His closest shot came at the Australian Open, where he fell in the final to Carlos Alcaraz.

Now, with Roland Garros just weeks away, the Serbian is in a race against time to regain fitness and form. His next scheduled stop is the Italian Open in May, but even that appearance isn’t guaranteed.

Not Alone in the Struggle

Interestingly, Djokovic isn’t the only big name dealing with fitness concerns. Alcaraz has also pulled out of Madrid for the second consecutive year due to a wrist injury, leaving the clay season wide open.

With two of the sport’s biggest stars sidelined, the build-up to Roland Garros has taken an unexpected turn. But if there’s one thing Djokovic has proven time and again, it’s that writing him off is a dangerous game.
