A 25-year-old nurse, who was previously infected with the Nipah virus, passed away today in Barasat, West Bengal, following a cardiac arrest. The deceased was one of two nursing staff members diagnosed with the infection a month ago; while her male colleague was discharged in January, her condition deteriorated, leading to her being placed on a ventilator. Although she had recently tested negative for the virus, government officials stated that the death was linked to comorbidities and lung infections resulting from the initial Nipah infection. The health department remains vigilant and has implemented all necessary precautionary measures to monitor the situation. This incident marks a significant Nipah-related fatality in the region after several years, prompting a high state of alert among health authorities. The government continues to emphasize that while the patient had cleared the virus, the long-term physiological damage led to the fatal outcome.
