A 21-year-old man is set to be charged with murder in the shocking Brooklyn shooting that killed a 7-month-old baby girl, with police revealing that the victim’s toddler brother was struck by the same bullet, the New York Post reported.Amuri Greene will face murder and two counts of attempted murder in connection with the death of Kaori Patterson-Moore, according to the NYPD
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, when the baby’s mother, Lianna Charles-Moore, was walking with her two children in a double stroller.Gunshots rang out near a crowded street corner, prompting her to run into a nearby store for safety.
Moments later, she realised her infant daughter had been shot in the head. The baby was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.
Toddler brother hit by same bullet
Police sources said the same bullet that killed the infant grazed her 2-year-old brother, leaving him with a back wound. The child survived and was treated in hospital.
What police said
Jessica S Tisch said the suspect had been identified after arriving at a hospital with a leg injury following the shooting.
Authorities believe the accused was riding on a moped and opened fire into a crowd. The vehicle later crashed into a car two blocks away.Police added that the shooting is believed to be gang-related, though the infant was not the intended target.
Mayor reacts
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the incident as a “devastating reminder” of the need to tackle gun violence.“We cannot accept this as normal,” he said, adding that the city must not become numb to such tragedies.
Suspect in custody, manhunt continues
Greene, who has no prior criminal record but is being investigated in connection with recent robberies, is currently in custody.Officials said he will be formally arrested and charged.Meanwhile, a search is underway for a second suspect who was allegedly driving the moped.
Family’s heartbreaking account
The baby’s mother recalled the moment she realised what had happened, saying she initially thought the sounds were fireworks.“I was hugging my son… then I looked and my daughter was just there… she was bleeding,” she said.Family members said the infant had only recently learned to say “mama,” underscoring the tragedy of a life cut short.
