With campaigning for the West Bengal Assembly elections gaining momentum, the Odisha unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has deployed close to 50 State leaders, including Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, to garner support for the party.

Mr. Majhi was present during the filing of nominations by BJP candidates from the Rampurhat, Hansan, Murarai and Nalhati Assembly constituencies on Thursday (April 2, 2026).

“Odisha Chief Minister is likely to make another eight to ten visits to West Bengal for campaigning and addressing public meetings,” said Bishnu Dash, one of the BJP’s coordinators for the West Bengal elections.

“Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, along with three MPs and seven MLAs from Odisha, is currently camping in West Bengal to help the party secure a historic victory in the neighbouring State,” he added.

He pointed out that districts such as Jhargram, Howrah, Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur have sizeable Odia-speaking populations, which the party is actively trying to reach out to.

“Moreover, Kolkata has been a preferred destination for work for people from Odisha for decades. Generations of Odia people have settled in the city and are now part of West Bengal’s social fabric. However, they remain connected to their roots in Odisha,” Mr. Dash said.

According to Odisha BJP sources, party leaders were also engaging with Odia samajs and associations in West Bengal, urging them to participate actively in the upcoming elections.

“We are also identifying migrant labourers from West Bengal working in Odisha and encouraging them to return home to cast their votes,” he said.

It may be noted that thousands of labourers from West Bengal are engaged in the agriculture and construction sectors in Odisha.
