Officer notices strange movement in a cardboard box near public restroom and calls for help

A routine drive through a local park in Oak Grove, Missouri, recently turned into an unexpected moment for the officers. Earlier this month, a K-9 officer with the Oak Grove Missouri, Animal Shelter was passing by the area when he noticed something unusual outside the public restrooms.

A cardboard box was left near the building. But what caught his attention was that the box was shaking on its own.At first glance, the cardboard box looked like a little piece of litter. But when the box moved again, the officer realised something was wrong.The cardboard box shouldn’t have been movingSensing the situation was about to degrade further, the officer contacted animal control and codes enforcement officer Emily Hart, who responded immediately.

The moment led to the discovery and rescue of three little kittens that had been left in unsafe conditions. When Hart approached the box, she found a small black ear peeking out from the top. Then she heard a faint cry coming from inside.Inside the box, there were three kittens, huddled close together. According to the animal control and codes enforcement officer, the animals were visibly scared, shaking and confused.

The kittens needed immediate careThe animals were believed to be only six weeks old. Hart carefully removed all three kittens from the box and brought them back to the shelter. There, alongside other staff members, she placed them in clean kennels with soft blankets and warm beds. The kittens were dehydrated and overheated after being left in the box outside for an extended period. One of them also had a visible wound on her head that needed treatment.

The kittens showed progressAccording to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, kittens under eight weeks old are especially vulnerable to dehydration, heat stress, and infection because their bodies cannot regulate temperature well.Veterinary experts at the shelter thus knew fast action was essential. They provided immediate medical attention to all the kittens and ensured they had plenty of food and water. Within days, the skinny kittens began to improve.How the kittens have changed from fear to curiosityHart also highlighted how the little ones now looked healthy and bright-eyed. With proper healing, their personalities also began to shine. According to the officer, the kittens were getting more curious every day, especially the two scared ones who huddled together in the box.She shared that the kittens quickly developed their favourite food. They became obsessed with Kirkland chicken pâté wet food, and indulging in them became the best part of their day.Research published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science shows that consistent care significantly improves behavioural recovery in rescued cats. According to animal welfare experts, food plays a major role in helping rescued animals recover emotionally after trauma.
