A leak of oleum, also known as fuming sulphuric acid, was reported from a chemical manufacturing unit in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on Monday afternoon. Authorities said there were no immediate reports of anyone being harmed by the toxic gas.

The leak occurred at the Bhageria Chemicals Company facility, earlier known as Zenith Chemicals, located in the MIDC D-Zone industrial area. The incident prompted a quick response from local authorities and emergency services.

According to Palghar District Collector and head of the District Disaster Management Authority, Dr Indu Rani Jakhar, the gas leak was reported around 2 pm. The plant is situated near the villages of Salwad and Pasthal within the district’s industrial belt.

Officials said that soon after the incident was reported, teams from the local administration, fire brigade, police and disaster management department reached the site. Efforts were immediately started to contain the leak and prevent any risk to nearby areas.

Dr Jakhar said preliminary information suggested that no person had been affected by the gas so far. A technical team is currently working at the site to bring the situation under control.

As a precaution, residents of Salwad and Pasthal villages were informed through social media and other communication channels about the incident and advised to follow safety measures.

The administration has asked people living nearby to avoid the affected area and cover their nose and mouth with a wet handkerchief, cloth or mask. Residents have also been advised to use protective items such as gloves and goggles if available.

Officials said that anyone who comes in contact with the gas should immediately wash the affected skin or eyes with clean water for at least 15 to 20 minutes and seek medical help even if the exposure appears minor.

Authorities also warned residents not to touch the leaked chemical or go near the site of the leak. They specifically cautioned people against pouring water on the chemical, as it could trigger a strong reaction and worsen the fumes.

Appealing for calm, Collector Jakhar urged residents not to panic or believe in rumours and to strictly follow the instructions issued by the district administration while the situation is being handled.
