Stepping inside the ring at the age of only 18, Tyson defeated Hector Mercedes during the 1985 pro boxing event at the Empire State Plaza Convention Centre, Albany, in the United States.
The young boxing sensation made the entire New York take note of his great powers and promise as a future boxing great with a first-round Technical Knockout (TKO) against Mercedes.
Tyson, playing his first-ever pro boxing match, became the opponent for only the second knock-out loss in Mercedes’ professional career. His thumping victory boosted the 18-year-old’s confidence and inspired him to great heights, as evidenced by his landmark win in November 1986, when Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in the history of pro boxing.

Going from one major title to another, Tyson won the World Boxing Association (WBA) belt after hammering James Smith in early 1987. Tyson later completed the troika of WBC, WBA, and the International Boxing Federation (IBF) titles.
A landmark achievement which would stamp any wrestler’s legacy by itself.
Tyson wasn’t one to rest on his laurels as the hardworking and ambitious pro boxer went on to defend his titles successfully over 10 times. His incredible run at the top of the pro boxing world included sensational wins over former champions Larry Holmes and Michael Spinks. By beating the duo, Tyson reinforced the start of his era inside the ring.
When he later dominated Michael Spinks in 1988, Tyson etched himself in the pantheon of pro boxing greats. The victory saw the American giant knock his opponent out in just 91 seconds.
As his popularity soared to new heights and he became a household name, Tyson was given nicknames such as ‘Iron Mike’ by his fans. Overall, in his memorable career, Tyson registered 50 pro boxing wins with a jaw-dropping 44 KOs.
