Electric vehicle owners may soon be able to access charging stations operated by different companies through a single mobile application, with the Centre developing a unified digital platform to simplify public EV charging across the country.

The Maharashtra government shared the details in a written reply to a question raised by BJP MLA Prashant Bamb in the Legislative Assembly.

Bamb had asked whether the government was considering a common mobile application for EV charging stations, as users currently have to download separate apps for different charging point operators (CPOs). In its reply, the government acknowledged that the existing system requires multiple operator-specific applications, making the charging experience fragmented and less convenient for consumers.

The government said the Centre is addressing the issue under the PM E-DRIVE scheme by developing ‘Unified Bharat E-Charge’, a national digital platform that will integrate public EV charging stations across operators. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been appointed as the Project Implementation Agency for developing the platform in line with the Operational Guidelines for Public EV Charging Stations.

Once operational, the platform will enable EV users to locate nearby charging stations, check charger availability, book charging slots and make digital payments through a single application, irrespective of the charging network. The initiative is aimed at improving interoperability across charging operators and eliminating the need for consumers to switch between multiple mobile applications.

The government said the unified platform is expected to create a seamless and standardised charging experience as India’s public EV charging network continues to expand.

While the written reply did not specify a timeline for its rollout, it said the objective is to provide consumers with a single digital interface for accessing charging services offered by different operators nationwide.
