Sunil Gavaskar blasts India after Ireland whitewash

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has described India's T20I series defeat to Ireland as "one of the lowest in the history of Indian cricket", blaming overconfidence and a casual approach for the 2-0 loss.Writing in his column for Sportstar magazine, Gavaskar said the result "will go down as one of the worst days in Indian cricket. Losing a game of cricket is one thing, but to lose a series, albeit a two-match series, also depends on whom you lose to."

"There are many low points in Indian cricket, and I have been a part of some, but to lose to Ireland has to be one of the lowest in the history of Indian cricket. If Ireland had played exceptional cricket, then it would have lessened the blow.

It was simply overconfidence and a sense of casualness that let India down, and that’s why the sadness," Gavaskar wrote in Sportstar.Ireland completed a 2-0 sweep after beating India by one run in the second T20I on Sunday. It was Ireland's first-ever series win over India in any format after they had won the opening match by 34 runs.Ireland posted 154 for eight in 20 overs before restricting India to 153 for nine, despite Prince Yadav hitting a six off the final ball.

It is easily the greatest moment in Irish cricket since Kevin O'Brien's epochal century when they beat England in the 2011 ODI World Cup.But humbling of the mighty India will certainly be at a different level for them.Gavaskar also questioned India's decision to leave out teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from both matches of the Ireland series. He felt the series was the right opportunity to introduce the youngster before India's upcoming tour of England."While the eventual result may justify not picking Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, this series was the ideal opportunity to give the young man a taste of international cricket. Hopefully, they will not waste any more time and will play him in the very first game against England in a few days’ time. Of course, the young man could fail, but if he gets going, then he will take the game away from the hosts and give India the chance to start the series with a bang," Gavaskar wrote.
