One student died and 11 others were injured after a tomato-laden tempo ran over them in Maharashtra’s Nashik district on Friday evening, police said.

The accident occurred around 5:30 pm at Sogras Phata in Chandwad taluka on the Mumbai–Agra highway.

According to police, the tempo, heading towards Pimpalgaon, veered out of control and hit a group of students crossing the road.

The deceased has been identified as Akshay Ramesh Mahale. Among the injured is the mother of one student.

Several of the injured have been admitted to hospitals in serious condition, said officials.

State school education minister Dadaji Bhuse, who was passing through the area at the time, assisted in the rescue efforts and later met the injured at the hospital.

Following the incident, local residents staged a protest and blocked the highway, citing frequent accidents on this stretch.
