New Delhi: In the near future OnePlus and Realme users may have one major change to the software that is currently running on their smartphones. OnePlus is facing a major dilemma as they reportedly might discontinue OxygenOS in India, an option Realme is also considering doing, reports have said. In the future, both of the brands are expected to be fully transitioned to OPPO’s ColorOS. While no announcement has been made by OnePlus, Realme, or OPPO, the reports indicate a move to make the companies’ software initiatives easier by switching to an operating system that all brands under the company would share.

OxygenOS Could Become a Part of ColorOS

The OnePlus is one of the most popular phones, and really, the Oxygen OS has been its major success factor. The software was loved for features including a near-stock Android operating system, performance as well as design. It’s known for providing a consistent performance to users and does not include any useless apps, making it one of the best Android skins, in many people’s opinions. But over the years, since OnePlus and OPPO decided to join forces in software development, things have started to change. It has since had many features in common with OxygenOS and ColorOS, and the divergence between the two has eroded.

As per reports now, it looks like OnePlus could potentially completely switch to ColorOS in India with the new OxygenOS. There is a possibility for future OnePlus devices to come preloaded with ColorOS and for older devices to get their updates with gradual changes until they are fully updated to ColorOS.

Realme UI May Also Be Discontinued

The realme owner may also need to get ready for a similar update. It’s believed that Realme UI might also be replaced by ColorOS in the future. The Realme UI was created on the basis of ColorOS, but later the company got its own appearance, functionality, and customization. In case the latest information is correct, then a version of ColorOS with only a minor change in the name of the smartphone could be used in the future. This will provide a benefit to OPPO, OnePlus, and Realme as they will have a single software and software development process.

Why This Change Could Happen

Having the same brand on many operating systems has a number of benefits. It provides companies with the ability to develop new capabilities for Android devices at a faster pace, better security updates, and lower software maintenance costs. The development teams can spend time optimizing a single software platform rather than having to maintain multiple copies of OxygenOS, Realme UI, and ColorOS. This will also be able to accelerate bug fixes and updates to Android on all the devices that are within this category. It would also simplify the inclusion of new features in the AI and system levels across its smartphone segments and introduce new features gradually on the at-large repository.

What It Means for Users

If this is the end of OxygenOS, it could be disappointing news for many OnePlus fans. Over the years the application has gained a loyal following due to its user-friendly interface, animations and light weight operation. Others fret that making the complete jump to ColorOS will stifle the distinctive look that defined OnePlus as one of the most interesting brands of Android devices. To be fair, though, modern versions of OxygenOS operating systems, along with ColorOS, have become quite similar, and many of the core features remain the same.

Considering Realme UI has been using ColorOS for a long time, you can expect fewer changes to the software as well if you are using a Realme phone. Expect very few changes to most day-to-day functions, performance and app compatibility.

No Official Confirmation Yet

These reports are unofficial at this time. OnePlus, Realme and OPPO have no intention of phasing out OxygenOS or Realme UI in India or anywhere else for that matter. Of course, until the companies make an official announcement, there is a danger that the reports should be treated as speculations. The transition will most likely take place slowly over time through updates to the previous software and the release of new smartphones that will be compatible with Android 4.4 KitKat. OnePlus and Realme fans can proceed without any changes to their devices for now and await official announcements as to what their future software platforms will be. If reported correctly, it would mean that two of the most popular Android skins will definitely be off the list, and a new era is ahead for a new skin, ColorOS.
