Even without a solo majority, Vijay’s first election transformed Tamil Nadu politics by breaking the long-standing DMK-AIADMK dominance

In a dazzling electoral debut, Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) captured 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly. Falling just 10 seats short of the magic 118-seat majority mark, the party was unable to form a government on its own.
TVK has had to rely on a coalition, drawing support from parties like the Congress and MNM, alongside outside backing from the CPI(M), CPI, VCK, and IUML.
A closer look at the data reveals an interesting reality: a mere 4,649 additional votes, strategically placed across 10 specific constituencies, would have secured an absolute majority for TVK without the need for post-poll alliances.
The Crucial 10 Battlegrounds
These 10 constituencies represent TVK’s narrowest defeats. In a first-past-the-post system, if TVK had secured just one vote more than half of the winning margin in these specific seats (effectively flipping those votes from the winner to TVK), the election outcome would have shifted entirely in their favour.
The 10 seats with the slimmest margins of defeat were Tirukkoyilur (285 votes), Kulithalai (579 votes), Palani (693 votes), Kovilpatti (843 votes), Vikravandi (910 votes), Udhagamandalam (976 votes), Papanasam (1065 votes), Dindigul (1131 votes), Killiyoor (1311 votes), and Thirumayam (1492 votes).
The Maths
A quick calculation shows that the absolute minimum number of swing votes required to tilt the scales in TVK’s favour across these 10 seats is exactly 4,649 (see table).
Where Did Those Seats Go?
The 10 constituencies that slipped through TVK’s fingers were claimed by a mix of rivals and current allies: DMK four, AIADMK two, BJP one, INC one, IUML one and PMK one.
An incredibly thin margin of fewer than 5,000 votes was all that stood between Vijay and a historic, single-party majority on his very first attempt.
Even without a solo majority, Vijay’s first election transformed Tamil Nadu politics by breaking the long-standing DMK-AIADMK dominance and catapulting TVK directly into government formation negotiations.
But the razor-thin margins underline how close the actor-turned-politician came to something even bigger: becoming the first newcomer in decades to secure a single-party majority in Tamil Nadu on debut. In the end, fewer than 5,000 votes, spread across a state of millions, stood between Vijay and complete political control.
