Congress J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hameed Karra and a legislator on Tuesday (February 10, 2026) said the only achievable special status for Jammu and Kashmir is Statehood.

“Since the Supreme Court (SC) abrogated (provisions of) Article 370 (in 2019), anything achievable is Statehood. The Statehood status means special status for us,” Mr. Karra said.

It’s the first time since the reading down of Article 370 that the Congress has openly decided to shun any demand of special status for J&K like the ruling National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Meanwhile, Mr. Karra said the frequent visits of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to J&K were indicative of the security situation in J&K.

“It’s not normal for the Home Minister to frequently visit J&K. I have been saying all along that militancy limited to Kashmir has now shifted to Jammu too. Around eight districts are affected by militancy,” Mr. Karra said.

However, Mr. Shah in New Delhi claimed that the situation is under control, he added.
