Chelsea secured a commanding 4-1 victory against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in the Premier League match at Villa Park on Thursday as Joao Pedro scored three goals, while Cole Palmer added one in a significant win for the Blues, following Douglas Luiz’s early goal for the Villans.
Luiz opened the scoring in the 6th minute by finishing off Leon Bailey’s pass, but Chelsea began to turn things around when Pedro equalised in the 35th minute. Ollie Watkins had a goal disallowed for offside in the 41st minute, and Chelsea took the lead just before half-time in the sixth minute of added time.
Pedro assisted Palmer for the third goal in the 55th minute, and Pedro completed his hat-trick in the 64th minute to secure the emphatic win.
Liam Rosenior heaped praise on the Brazilian star, who was instrumental in Chelsea’s win and the London club’s hopes of UEFA Champions League qualification alive.
“He’s a top player. I think he’s growing in confidence. His goal with the left foot is world class. The finish is magnificent," he said.
“But actually, I’m really delighted with his two tap-ins that he got. He was in the right place at the right time.
“We worked hard with him on that, but he gets the hat-trick. It’s really hard to single someone out, but I thought it was an outstanding team performance."
Fourth-placed Chelsea took their points tally for the season to 48 points from 29 games, the same as sixth-place Liverpool, and remain just three points adrift of fourth-placed Villa, and the Chelsea boss called his team to come up with such performances, such as the one against Aston Villa going forward.
“It’s only significant if we back it up. We have to be consistent," Rosenior said.
“We have massive FA Cup game, then we’ve got huge game in Paris (in the Champions League), and then we’ve got another huge game against Newcastle.
“We just need to back it up and not look at the significance of the games. We just need to perform. And if we perform at that level, we’re going to be in a good place."
