OPEC+ members have decided to unwind production cuts by 206,000 barrels per day for the month of May, signalling a gradual increase in oil supply amid ongoing global uncertainties.
The decision comes as the group continues to closely monitor the energy market, especially in light of recent disruptions and rising geopolitical tensions affecting supply routes and infrastructure.
According to updates shared online, the next OPEC+ meeting is scheduled for May 3, where further decisions on output levels are expected to be reviewed.
The group also flagged concerns over recent attacks on energy infrastructure and their wider impact on global supply chains. In a statement, it said, “The group ‘expressed concern regarding attacks on energy infrastructure, noting that restoring damaged energy assets to full capacity is both costly and takes a long time, thereby affecting overall supply availability."
The eight participating countries decided to implement a production adjustment of 206 thousand barrels per day from the 1.65 million barrels per day additional voluntary adjustments announced in April 2023. It further added, “Accordingly, the Committee stressed that any actions undermining energy supply security, whether through attacks on infrastructure or disruption of international maritime routes, increase market volatility and weaken the collective efforts under the DoC to support market stability for the benefit of producers, consumers, and the global economy."
The move to raise output comes at a time when oil markets remain sensitive to supply risks, particularly due to tensions in key regions and disruptions along major shipping routes. OPEC+’s cautious increase reflects its attempt to balance supply stability with ongoing market challenges.
