Open dumping of garbage on narrow road a major civic concern in Cuttack

Cuttack: Open dumping of garbage on a narrow road has emerged as a major civic concern for residents of Saanta Sahi area in Cuttack city. The garbage pile, located between the busy Dolamundai and Bajrakabati areas, has been causing inconvenience to commuters and residents alike.Locals alleged that sanitation workers of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) have been regularly dumping waste on the roadside despite the lane being narrow and used frequently by pedestrians, cyclists and two-wheelers. Residents said the accumulation of waste has not only created an unhygienic environment but also raised fears of diseases and foul smell in the locality.“Garbage is dumped here almost every day and it remains unattended for long hours. The road is already narrow and the waste blocks a portion of it, making it difficult for people to pass through,” said Shibangi Mohapatra, a resident of Saanta SahiThe area is considered a prominent residential pocket with many doctors, professors, bureaucrats and lawyers living there. However, the locality continues to struggle with basic cleanliness issues, added ShibangiAnother resident, Sujata Rath, said, “The situation worsens during the night when stray animals scatter the waste.

Dogs and cows rummage through the garbage and spread it across the road. The stench becomes unbearable and it is embarrassing for residents as this is a prominent locality.”Advocate Debasish Das,who resides close to the narrow roads, said, “Repeated complaints have been made to civic authorities but the problem persists. We have requested the authorities to stop dumping waste on the road and arrange proper collection, but there has been no permanent solution so far.”

When contacted, CMC mayor Subhash Singh said, “I have asked the sanitation officials to verify the matter. If garbage is being dumped on the road, immediate steps will be taken to clear it and ensure proper waste management in the area.”Residents have urged the civic body to take urgent measures to maintain cleanliness and prevent roadside dumping in the locality.
