New Delhi: OpenAI has recently reported in some sources that it is gearing up to enter the hardware market with its range of AI-powered devices. OpenAI’s first product could be a smart speaker that is powered by a camera. Along with this, the company is also stated to be working on the smart glasses and smart lamp.

In some reports, it has also been stated that OpenAI’s first AI device is likely to be introduced in early 2027. OpenAI’s first consumer device is being developed in collaboration with the former Apple Design chief Jony Ive, with the project having moved into the prototyping phase in 2025.

OpenAI is setting up a dedicated hardware team of more than 200 employees to develop these devices. Its first product is been expected to be introduced is a smart speaker that is stated to go beyond voice commands. The device is suggested to include a built-in camera designed to observe its surroundings and better understand the user’s environment.

The camera might allow the speaker to identify objects on a nearby table and detect conversations around it. These visual elements would be reported to help the device respond more contextually.

It is also expected to support facial recognition for user authentication, similar to Apple’s Face ID, by enabling users to approve purchases securely. OpenAI is also updating its audio model architecture ahead of the planned hardware debut.

The upgraded models are also expected to generate more natural and expressive speech, provide more detailed replies, and respond more smoothly when interrupted. They might also support the overlapping search by enabling the AI to speak while the user is talking, a feature that current ChatGPT voice capabilities do not support.

OpenAI is stated to be developing AI-powered smart glasses, which are also expected to arrive later, possibly in 2028. The smart lamp has already been prototyped, but it is unclear whether it will move into commercial production. OpenAI is not alone in exploring the AI-powered hardware.

Apple is reported to be working on its own smart glasses, alongside an AI-powered wearable pendant and AirPods powered with a camera. These devices will rely on built-in cameras and integrate closely with the iPhone. The smart glasses might be the most advanced device, while the pendant and camera-equipped AirPods will be simpler products mainly built to support Apple’s Siri assistant with the visual inputs.
