OpenAI names Uber’s Prabhjeet Singh India MD

Bengaluru: OpenAI has appointed Prabhjeet Singh, Uber’s president for India and South Asia, as its managing director for India, marking one of the company’s most significant leadership appointments in India.Singh will join OpenAI in September and report to Kiran Mani, managing director for Asia Pacific, the company confirmed.He will be OpenAI’s most senior leader in India and will be responsible for its performance across consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement and operations.The appointment comes at a time when India is emerging as a key market for global AI companies, both because of its large consumer base and the growing interest among businesses, startups, institutions and government bodies in deploying artificial intelligence tools.Singh’s mandate will include building partnerships, supporting India’s wider AI ecosystem and helping more consumers, businesses, institutions and government bodies benefit from AI, OpenAI said.The move also confirms Singh’s next role after Uber India said earlier that he was leaving the ride-hailing company to take up another leadership opportunity.Uber confirmed Singh’s exit in a statement. “We thank Prabhjeet for his leadership and lasting contributions in his decade-long journey with Uber.

We remain deeply committed to our next phase of growth in India,” an Uber spokesperson said.Singh most recently served as president of Uber India and South Asia, where he led the company’s mobility business across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.He joined Uber in 2015 as general manager and head of strategy and was elevated to president of the India and South Asia business in 2020. He is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad.For OpenAI, the appointment gives it a senior India leader at a time when the company is expected to engage more closely with enterprises, developers, policymakers and government agencies in the country. India is among the world’s largest markets for internet users and has become an important testing ground for consumer AI adoption, enterprise AI use cases and public sector partnerships.
