ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has once again delayed the rollout of its planned ‘adult mode’ for ChatGPT, citing ongoing safety and compliance concerns, as reported by Axios. The adult mode in ChatGPT was initially expected to launch earlier this year but has been now postponed indefinitely as the company works to refine safeguards around sensitive content.
What is adult mode
The proposed ‘adult mode’ in ChatGPT is designed to enable the chatbot to handle more mature topics with fewer restrictions, while still maintaining guardrails against harmful or illegal content. This mode was intended to offer more flexibility to the users in conversations including adult themes, but its release has been repeatedly pushed back.
Reason behind the delay
As reported by Axios, OpenAI is holding back the launch due to safety, regulatory and ethical considerations.
The company also stressed on the fact that it must make sure that the feature does not expose minor to inappropriate material and compiles with evolving global standards around online age restrictions. This comes at a time when countries like Australia, Britain, France, and several U.S. states are tightening rules on age verification and online content moderation. OpenAI’s delay reflects the growing pressure on tech firms to balance innovation with child safety and regulatory compliance.
"We're pushing out the launch of adult mode so we can focus on work that is a higher priority for more users right now," an OpenAI representative said in a statement to Axios.OpenAI has not provided a new timeline for the release of adult mode. The company stated it will continue testing internally and consulting with regulators and safety experts before making the feature publicly available.
