A nine-year-old girl from Rajasthan’s Sikar died of back-to-back heart attacks that struck her within hours, officials from her school told Indian Express Rajasthan on Wednesday.
The girl, Prachi Kumawat, was a student of Class 4 and was studying in Adarsh Vidya Mandir in Danta, Sikar.
“Prima facie, the child had a heart attack. She had sustained a sudden cardiac arrest in the school," Dr RK Jangid, posted at Danta Community Health Centre (CHC), was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
He further added that the girl did not have congenital heart disease or a history of heart ailments.
Adarsh Vidya Mandir’s principal, Nand Kishore, told Indian Express Rajasthan that the Prachi suffered the first heart attack when she opened her lunchbox. “It happened around 11 am Tuesday… She dropped her lunchbox and collapsed. We were all on school grounds at the time, so we rushed her to the hospital," Kishore was quoted as saying.
“Students fainting is not new and kids usually recover once we give them some water. However, her situation was different. So, we took her to the CHC which is just about 500 metres away. There, the medical staff took care of her and she initially seemed to have recovered," he further added.
He said the staff at the CHC stabilised her briefly before referring her to a hospital in Sikar. “They put her in a government ambulance. But on the way, she suffered another heart attack. The doctors administered injections and did everything they could before sending the ambulance off. We don’t know if she made it to the hospital, but the ambulance left around 12:15 pm. Around 1:30 pm, we heard she had passed away," the principal said.
“She was just a kid. She was smart and knew tables till 40. She was a cheerful and lively kid. Even if we used to scold her, she used to keep smiling," Kishore further added. Prachi’s last rites were performed at about 4 pm on Tuesday, the newspaper said.
