The police have registered 175 cases and booked 182 people under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Ernakulam district in two days in combing operations held as part of the Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt.
While the Ernakulam Rural police registered 80 cases and arrested 85 people in a special drive on Sunday (June 28), the Kochi city police booked 95 cases and 102 people on Saturday (June 27), the police said.
Of those arrested by the rural police, five were remanded in judicial custody. The seizures of suspected narcotic varieties made in connection with the cases included 2.45 grams of MDMA, 115.13 grams of cannabis, 20 cannabis beedis, 5.02 grams of heroin, and 5.34 grams of hashish.
Forty people were arrested in as many cases for allegedly possessing small quantities of narcotic substances as defined in the NDPS law. As many as 22 people were arrested for alleged consumption of drugs. In addition, 18 persons were arrested in 18 cases related to banned tobacco products.
The cases include 10 registered by the Perumbavoor police, six in Edathala and five in Aluva.
Searches were also carried out at railway stations, bus stands, vehicles, hotels, lodges, and commercial establishments.
The city police registered the cases following raids conducted in 181 locations. The police also registered 45 cases for alleged drunk driving, 15 under the Abkari Act and 19 relating to the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act. The police said such extensive checks will continue in the coming days.
