The brother-in-law of Karnataka-based businessman Manjunath, who was killed in front of his family in the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, has condemned senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram’s remark suggesting that the attackers may have been “homegrown terrorists".

Manjunath was among the 26 people shot dead by terrorists at Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, after being identified by their religion. Most of the victims were tourists, gunned down in front of their families.

Speaking to CNN-News18 on Tuesday, Dr Ravi Kiran, Manjunath’s brother-in-law, slammed the opposition, calling their response “irresponsible".

“I don’t think Chidambaram should ask such questions. These kinds of statements end up supporting Pakistan," he said.

“What proof does the Congress have that the terrorists were homegrown? The opposition should be asking Pakistan for answers, not our government," Kiran added.

Chidambaram, in a recent interview, had sparked controversy by questioning the origin of the attackers. He had said, “For all we know they could be homegrown terrorists. Why do you assume that they came from Pakistan? There is no evidence of that. They are also hiding the losses."

The brother-in-law also expressed his gratitude to the security forces for the success of Operation Mahadev, in which the mastermind behind the April 22 attack was eliminated.

“I’m very happy today. I congratulate the armed forces for Operation Mahadev," he said.

In a major breakthrough, the Army’s elite para commandos killed Sulieman alias Asif, the key planner of the Pahalgam attack, in an encounter on Monday near Dachigam National Park in the Harwan area. Two other terrorists, Jibran and Hamza Afghani, were also killed in the operation.

The action, codenamed ‘Operation Mahadev’, was launched after a technical intercept traced a satellite phone linked to the Pahalgam attackers. Jibran was also allegedly involved in the Sonamarg tunnel attack last year.
