Maharashtra govt to rename Islampur to ‘Ishwarpur’ (PTI)

The Maharashtra Government announced on Friday that Islampur in Sangli district will be renamed as Ishwarpur. The government issued statement in the state legislature on the final day of the monsoon session. The state politics is divided over the decision, while government call it a ‘cultural renaissance’, opposition is calling the move a step towards ‘creating casteism and conflicts’.

The Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, Chhagan Bhujbal informed the assembly that the decision to rename Islampur was made during the cabinet meeting on Thursday. The state government will send the proposal to the Centre for approval.
