Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has been tasked with identifying the perfect man to serve the club between the sticks as he held back from revealing who will start with the gloves for the former Premier League Champions with the gloves on against Brighton in their upcoming English top-flight encounter against Brighton, but added that his focus isn’t solely on the goalkeeper.
Guardiola opened the season with James Trafford in goal against Wolves as Ederson missed the game due to illness. Trafford went on to retain his place in the side’s game against Tottenham, but had a nightmare as his howler led to a goal for the Spurs in their 2-0 win over City.
With transfer news linking Ederson with Turkish side Galatasaray and a possible acquisition of PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, Guardiola refrained from ruling out any possible options as he backed Trafford to bounce back.
“In this part of the season, and at all the clubs before the international transfer window is closed, everything is possible. It’s as simple as that," Guardiola said.
“After that, we’re going to play Manchester United and in the Champions League and Arsenal. After that everything will be more clear and we’ll take decisions," the Spaniard said.
“It depends on the performance and it depends on many reasons. It’s not just the keepers, it’s all the players," he added.
“We take care of them. Of course, he was concerned –- I would not like it if he was not concerned, but of course we are here to help them, no doubt about that. We’re here to support in the bad moments," the City boss said.
When quizzed who would guard the posts against the Seagulls, Guardiola jested that he would get to the team selection on the following day in trademark fashion.
“Tomorrow – because I don’t have a press conference."
“We have a long squad and all the players have maybe signings elsewhere –- maybe. People leave. It’s what it is. The transfer window is in that way. You have to accept it," he explained.
Guardiola also expressed his delight with Ballon d’Or winning midfielder Rodri’s inclusion in the Spanish national side despite the star midfielder featuring for just quarter of an hour in City colours.
“He feels better and needs minutes. I think they talk to each other and they decided to select him. I never say when a player is fit, always I support them to go to the national team," Guardiola concluded.
