Ousmane Dembélé produced one of the most remarkable individual performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday, scoring a devastating first-half hat-trick as France faced Norway in their Group I clash.

The reigning Ballon d'Or winner completed his treble inside the opening 32 minutes, becoming the fastest French player ever to score a World Cup hat-trick while also rewriting tournament history with the second-fastest hat-trick from kick-off in men's World Cup history. The performance also ended a 32-year wait for a first-half World Cup hat-trick. Not since Russia's Oleg Salenko scored three times before the interval against Cameroon at the 1994 World Cup had a player completed a first-half treble on football's biggest stage.

Dembélé dismantles Norway inside 32 minutes

France needed little time to seize control at Gillette Stadium, with Dembélé at the heart of everything. His opener arrived in the seventh minute after Kylian Mbappé spotted his run with an excellent long-range diagonal pass. Receiving the ball on the right flank, Dembélé skipped past his marker with a sharp touch, drove inside and rifled a powerful right-footed strike beyond the Norwegian goalkeeper to hand France an early advantage.

The second goal followed in the 20th minute and again began with Mbappé. The French captain released Dembélé into space on the right, where the winger shifted effortlessly onto his favoured left foot before bending a superb curling finish beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

Norway briefly threatened to respond through Thelo Aasgaard, but France's momentum never disappeared. In the 32nd minute, Dembélé completed his historic treble.

Cutting in from the right once more, he waited patiently for the defenders to commit before calmly placing another left-footed finish into the far corner to complete his hat-trick just over half an hour after kick-off.The three goals arrived within a span of 26 minutes, transforming the Group I contest into another statement performance for Didier Deschamps' side.

Two World Cup records fall in one unforgettable night

Dembélé's extraordinary first half immediately secured two significant places in FIFA World Cup history. He became the first player since Oleg Salenko's famous performance against Cameroon in 1994 to score a hat-trick before half-time at a men's World Cup, ending a streak that had lasted more than three decades. He also completed his treble in just 32 minutes from kick-off, making it the second-fastest hat-trick from the opening whistle in World Cup history. Only Austria's Erich Probst reached three goals sooner, completing his hat-trick in 24 minutes against Czechoslovakia during the 1954 tournament.

For France, no player has ever reached a World Cup hat-trick more quickly. Dembélé's 32-minute treble now stands as the fastest in the nation's tournament history.

The fastest World Cup hat-tricks from kick-off

The quickest men's FIFA World Cup hat-tricks completed from the opening whistle are:

  • Erich Probst (Austria) — 24th minute vs Czechoslovakia (1954)
  • Ousmane Dembélé (France) — 32nd minute vs Norway (2026)
  • Gary Lineker (England) — 36th minute vs Poland (1986)
  • Gerd Müller (West Germany) — 38th minute vs Peru (1970)
  • Oleg Salenko (Russia) — 44th minute vs Cameroon (1994)

Dembélé's achievement also moved him ahead of England legend Gary Lineker on the all-time list while becoming the highest-ranked French player ever.

Golden Boot race takes another twist

The hat-trick has dramatically reshaped the race for the tournament's Golden Boot.Having entered the match with one goal, Dembélé's treble lifted him onto four goals for the tournament. He now sits level with France teammate Kylian Mbappé, Brazil's Vinícius Júnior and Norway's Erling Haaland, with only Lionel Messi ahead after the Argentina captain reached five goals earlier in the competition.

France now head into the knockout stages with both Mbappé and Dembélé among the tournament's leading scorers, giving Didier Deschamps two of the most prolific attacking players remaining in the competition. For Dembélé personally, Friday's performance will be remembered long after the group stage. In the space of 32 breathtaking minutes, he became France's fastest-ever World Cup hat-trick scorer, produced the first first-half treble at the tournament since 1994, and recorded the second-fastest hat-trick from kick-off in World Cup history.
