A Class 2 girl in a government school in Odisha's Keonjhar district was accidentally locked inside the school building overnight on Thursday and found the next morning in a critical but stable condition, sources told India Today.

According to sources, the girl remained inside the school after other students had left. Unaware of her presence, the school gatekeeper locked the main gate from outside.

The girl's family raised an alarm when she did not return home, and villagers searched throughout the night but could not locate her.

Trapped, the girl attempted to escape by breaking the iron bars on the windows. She eventually squeezed through but got her head stuck, causing serious injuries.

The next morning, villagers discovered the girl stuck in a window and alerted the authorities. A rescue team arrived and managed to free her, after which she was rushed to a hospital. Doctors later confirmed her condition had improved.

A video of the girl stuck in the window has gone viral online, drawing widespread outrage. Villagers demanded strict action against school staff, prompting the administration to launch an inquiry.

Sanjita, a teacher at the school, explained, "Normally, our school cook locks the classroom doors, but due to heavy rain, he was absent. When we were closing the rooms at 4:10 pm, we sent two seventh-class students to lock the doors. A second-class girl had fallen asleep on a lower desk, and by mistake, the students did not notice her".
