Lindsey Vonn made it very clear that she will decide when her career ends, not strangers on the internet. The American ski legend recently pushed back at a fan who told her it was time to retire after a serious crash at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.
Vonn, who is 41, is still recovering from a painful leg injury she suffered during the women’s downhill race on February 8. The crash was serious. She fractured her left tibia and has already gone through five surgeries. Despite that long recovery ahead, Vonn says she is not thinking about retirement right now.The conversation started on social media when someone suggested she should stop racing. Vonn answered back directly.
Her response quickly caught attention across the sports world. Soon after, tennis legend Martina Navratilova also stepped in to show her support and encourage Vonn to take things at her own pace. The exchange has now sparked a bigger conversation about Vonn’s future in the sport she has loved her whole life.

“Who said I was retiring?” Vonn wrote on X.One fan replied harshly, telling her she should step away from the sport after such a serious injury. The person wrote, “The ego is so strong with this one. Take your medicine Lindsey. You nearly lost your leg. Put your feet up and be done.”Lindsey Vonn did not ignore the comment. She responded with a calm but firm message.“I think you’re mistaking my ego for joy,” Vonn wrote. “I’ve said it my whole life; I love skiing.
I’ll put my feet up when I’m good and ready thank you.”Tennis great Martina Navratilova later supported Vonn with a message on her X account. Navratilova wrote, “Lindsey will call it quits on her own terms. Meantime get well and then she will see :) go Champ!!!”The injury that started this debate happened during the women’s downhill race at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. According to HuffPost, Vonn clipped a gate just 13 seconds into her run and flew off course.
The crash left her with a complex fracture in her left tibia. Since that accident, Vonn has undergone five surgeries. Doctors worked to repair the damage and help her leg heal. The injury was serious enough that some people feared she could lose her leg. Still, Lindsey Vonn has made it clear she is not ready to walk away from skiing. Her determination has always been a big part of her career. Vonn is one of the most successful alpine skiers ever.
She has 84 World Cup wins and won Olympic downhill gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games. She also earned two Olympic bronze medals. However, not everyone close to her agrees with her decision to keep racing. Her father, Alan Kildow, recently told the Associated Press that he believes her career should end.“She’s 41 years old and this is the end of her career,” Kildow said in February. “There will be no more ski races for Lindsey Vonn, as long as I have anything to say about it.” Even with that pressure, Vonn’s message remains simple. She still loves skiing, and she plans to decide her future herself.
