Pakistan is mulling a “decisive action" against elements accused of disrupting law and order in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK), as the region continues to remain on edge with violent protests demanding economic and governance reforms.
An action is expected tonight against the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) — which is leading the agitation, sources told CNN-News18, adding authorities have decided on a major crackdown against what they call “disruptive" elements.
Preparations are said to be underway for action against those alleged to have spread fear, paralyzed public life, damaged public and private property, or taken the law into their own hands, said sources familiar with the matter.
Those found responsible for unlawful acts are expected to face legal consequences under due process.
Why PoK Is On The Boil
Violent protests in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) began early June as protestors accused Islamabad authorities of suppressing dissent and neglecting longstanding grievances related to basic rights and governance.
The protests have now spread across several parts of PoK, with Rawalakot witnessing fresh violence overnight.
According to a report by the news agency AFP, the death count from clashed between police and protestors reached 20 on Friday. Meanwhile, Pakistan security forces have intensified their crackdown on demonstrators, with the number of arrests crossing 1,000.
A prolonged internet and mobile services blackout have added to the woes of the residents, with locals claiming the shutdown has paralysed communication, blocked access to emergency services and deepened shortages of medicines and food.
The protests have also sparked outrage among Kashmiri diaspora groups abroad, with demonstrations reported outside Pakistan’s diplomatic missions in the United Kingdom and the United States.
