Kochi: The proposed Paliyam Thuruth-Kadamakkudy bridge, key for direct connectivity from Moolampilly to Chattanad, crossed a major bureaucratic hurdle on Sunday. A high-level stakeholder meeting chaired by Vypeen MLA Tony Chammany at Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) headquarters gave the final approval for the bridge alignment.A portion of land, nearly 7.5 cents, required for the bridge alignment is currently held by Water Metro. The newly approved plan guarantees the acquisition of this land for the bridge without jeopardizing future expansion phases of the Water Metro.Funded by Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) and executed by Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB), the project aims to transform the transport landscape of Goshree island clusters.
For decades, the archipelago of Kadamakkudy, despite its proximity to mainland Kochi, suffered from geographical isolation. Residents have depended on traditional country boats and ferry services, severely limiting local economic growth and compromising medical emergency access. Two bridges, Moolampilly-Pizhala and Valiya Kadamakudy-Chatanad, have been constructed for road connectivity between Moolampilly and Chathanad.
The project will establish a seamless mainland link, radically cutting travel time between the northern suburbs and Kochi city.Beyond easing daily commutes, the infrastructure upgrade is expected to provide a major boost to local aquaculture, traditional businesses and responsible tourism, given Kadamakkudy’s rising popularity as a scenic backwater destination.“A major obstacle for the bridge has been cleared. An agreement has been reached to hand over land owned by Kochi Water Metro for the bridge construction.
With this, the region’s development and transport facilities are set to receive a major boost,” said Chammany. With the final alignment approved and inter-departmental clearances secured, the land acquisition process is set to accelerate. Officials close to the project indicate that engineering schedules will be fast-tracked to ensure construction begins without further delay.
