Gurgaon: Two Nigerians, one of whom is already facing a case under the Foreigners Act, were arrested for cheating a man from Pataudi of Rs 63,500 through an online romance scam involving a fake immigration emergency.According to the police, the two accused, Kelvin Ogbu and Kingsley Emeka Ojobo, created a fake Facebook profile by the name of Kathlin and connected with the complainant. They started interacting on WhatsApp and “Kathlin” messaged the complainant from two numbers — one a UK number and another an Indian one — to make the scam more convincing.“While they were messaging each other, the woman expressed her interest in visiting India and coming to meet him.
Both agreed to this,” said ACP (Cyber) Gaurav Fogat. However soon afterwards, the complainant received a call from a man posing as a customs officer at Mumbai airport, who claimed that the woman had run out of money and required funds for customs verification. Believing the claims, the complainant transferred Rs 63,500 into multiple bank accounts shared by the accused, ACP said. Both Kelvin and Kingsley came to the country on business visas.
While Kingsley arrived this year, Kelvin had come to India in 2025. He had also visited the country in 2023.They were arrested from Jawahar Park in Delhi on Monday by a team from the Cyber Crime police station in Manesar.During verification, police found a case under the Foreigners Act was already registered against Kelvin at the Nihal Vihar police station in Delhi in 2024.Police recovered a mobile phone used in the commission of the offence.
