Patient’s kin accuse DMCH of administering blood of wrong group, hosp denies claim

Dhubri: Family members of a 61-year-old ICU patient at Dhubri Medical College and Hospital have alleged that he received blood from the wrong group during transfusion. The patient, Abu Bakkar Siddique of Kutkutarbhitta under Bilasipara police station in Dhubri district, was admitted with extremely low haemoglobin.

His family said his blood group is O, but he was administered B-group blood. The incident triggered anger among family members, who demanded a probe by an independent medical body.DMCH authorities have denied the allegations. DMCH principal Dr Ankumoni Saikia told the media on Wednesday that, following the family’s demand, the patient’s blood sample was sent to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital for examination, and the report was found to be normal.Saikia, however, admitted that the controversy arose after a bottle containing O-group blood was wrongly labelled as B-group.“I have already terminated the man contractually engaged for the labelling of groups on blood bottles. We are also taking steps against the doctors attending the patient,” Dr Saikia said.
