The Patna court on Tuesday strongly objected to the manner in which senior IPS officer Sunil Nayak was arrested from his residence in Bihar. The court further denied the transit remand request of Nayak in connection with the case related to Raghurama Krishna Raju and pointed out serious procedural violations in the arrest process.
The Patna court expressed displeasure over the manner in which the arrest was conducted and directed that Naik should not be arrested for 30 days.
The court also took note that he had earlier approached courts for legal remedies and had indicated willingness to cooperate with the investigation.
The Andhra Pradesh police arrested IPS officer Sunil Nayak in Bihar on Monday in connection with the alleged custodial torture of the Deputy Speaker of the state assembly, K Raghurama Krishna Raju, during the previous YSRCP administration.
Guntur district superintendent of police (SP) Vakul Jindal said the arrest was recorded and Nayak is being brought to Andhra Pradesh.
Recalling that Nayak was on state-to-state deputation during the previous YSRCP regime, Jindal said he had supervised Raju’s arrest as the then DIG of CID.
Raju was arrested during the peak of COVID-19 in 2021 for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the then Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Following his arrest, Raju alleged that he was subjected to torture in police custody.
The incident occurred when the YSR Congress Party was in power in Andhra Pradesh. After the Telugu Desam Party returned to office in 2025, the case was reopened and the investigation intensified.
Who Is IPS Sunil Kumar Nayak?
Sunil Kumar Nayak is a 2005-batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre. Originally from Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, he was allotted to the Bihar cadre and joined the Indian Police Service on December 12, 2005.
Over the years, he served as Superintendent of Police in several districts of Bihar before being sent on inter-cadre deputation to Andhra Pradesh in January 2020 for a 3-year tenure.
During his deputation from 2019 to 2023, Nayak served as Deputy Inspector General in the CID wing of Andhra Pradesh Police and was associated with several high-profile investigations.
One of the cases during that period involved the arrest of former MP K Raghurama Krishna Raju in 2021. Raju, who was then associated with the YSR Congress Party, alleged that he was assaulted and denied medical treatment while in CID custody, allegations that had triggered significant political controversy at the time.
