With the summer heat driving up electricity consumption in Kerala, the peak demand touched 5,802 megawatts (MW) on Wednesday (March 26, 2026), which is an all-time high for the State.

The previous record was 5,797 MW recorded on May 2, 2024.

The daily electricity consumption on Wednesday was recorded at 108.03 million units (mu), which is the highest so far this year. Kerala had recorded its highest daily consumption of 115.94 mu on May 3, 2024.

With consumption soaring, top officials of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) met on Thursday (March 26) to assess the situation. The meeting concluded that the KSEB would be able to handle the demand even if consumption increases in the coming days, the utility said in a statement. KSEB managing director Minhaj Alam, directors of the board and senior officials attended the meeting.

Storage in the reservoirs of the hydel projects managed by the KSEB stood at 45% on Wednesday, equivalent to 1866 mu.
