An internal Pentagon email has outlined possible measures to penalise NATO allies seen as not supporting US operations during the Iran war. Options reportedly include suspending Spain from the alliance and taking a relook at Washington’s stance on Britain’s claim to the Falkland Islands, Reuters reported. Follow Live Updates Here
According to Reuters, the email reflects frustration within the US administration over allies’ reluctance to provide access, basing and overflight (ABO) rights during the conflict. A US official told Reuters that these options are being discussed at senior levels within the Pentagon.
Frustration Over NATO Support
According to Reuters, the email reportedly describes ABO support as the “baseline" expectation for NATO allies. Officials expressed concern that several countries did not meet this standard. One option under discussion is sidelining “difficult" nations from influential NATO positions.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticised allies for not contributing naval support to reopen the Strait of Hormuz during the conflict. Reuters noted that Trump has even raised the possibility of withdrawing from NATO, though the email does not propose such a move.
Spain, UK Among Key Concerns
Spain has emerged as a focal point in the discussions. Reuters reported that its refusal to allow US forces to use bases or airspace for strikes on Iran has drawn sharp criticism. The US maintains key installations in Spain, including Naval Station Rota and Morón Air Base.
The email also suggests reviewing US diplomatic backing for certain European territorial claims, including Britain’s control of the Falkland Islands. Such a move would carry symbolic weight and signal dissatisfaction with allied support.

Wider Impact On NATO
The developments come amid growing strain within the alliance following the US-Israel conflict with Iran. Analysts and diplomats cited by Reuters said the situation has raised concerns about NATO’s future cohesion and the reliability of mutual defence commitments.
While countries like Britain and France have indicated willingness to support maritime security after a ceasefire, they have resisted direct involvement in the conflict, citing risks of escalation.
US Signals Tougher Stance
A Pentagon spokesperson said the administration is reviewing options to ensure allies contribute more meaningfully. US officials reportedly view NATO as needing to move away from what they described as a “one-way" arrangement.
The email’s proposals, while not final decisions, highlight the pressure being applied by Washington to reshape alliance dynamics following the Iran conflict, Reuters reported.
