At least five police personnel were injured after people brought down police barricades during a Muharram procession in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain on Saturday night.

The incident allegedly occurred after the procession attempted to take a prohibited route, deviating from the fixed path agreed upon with district authorities. Cops resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

The video of the incident, which has now surfaced on social media, showed the people trying to break the barricades while carrying out the symbolic horse during the procession.

After authorities used force to disperse the unruly crowd, several people fled the area — including those carrying the tazia, a symbolic replica of Imam Hussain’s mausoleum — abandoning the ceremonial horse at the scene.

“A case has been registered against 16 people, including one organiser, for disturbing law and order. We are also trying to identify others with the help of CCTV footage obtained from the location," a senior police officer said.

The authorities said that they have booked 16 persons, including the procession’s organiser, under BNS Sections 191, 192, 132 and 121.

Earlier on Saturday, police in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj arrested 22 individuals for allegedly participating in a Muharram procession without official permission. A total of 40 people were named in the FIR, with 18 still absconding.

The incident occurred on Thursday around 8 PM in the Sirsa market area of the city’s Yamunanagar zone.

The unauthorised procession reportedly led to tensions in the locality, sparking protests from local traders and a brief confrontation.

Police intervened promptly to bring the situation under control, and an FIR was lodged based on a collective complaint from the traders.
