Rangayana Kalaburagi celebrated World Theatre Day with a series of cultural programmes, performances and discussions here on Friday highlighting the transformative power of theatre in society.

The event featured theatre music, an interactive session on theatre and a presentation of Ekatari folk compositions.

Inaugurating the programme, Head of the Department of English at Central University of Karnataka Basavaraj Donur said that theatre plays a crucial role in shaping values.

“Theatre teaches civility, culture and humanity. It has the power to reveal the true nature of individuals and bring out hidden emotions,” he said.

Describing theatre as one of the oldest and most powerful artistic expressions, he noted that it is not merely a medium of entertainment but a living institution that educates and unites people.

Citing examples from literature, he said that drama has historically been used to expose truth and challenge wrongdoing.

Guest speaker H.S. Basavaprabhu said that while cinema may bring fame and wealth, theatre shapes individuals into becoming better human beings.

“Like a great book that changes a reader’s thinking, theatre inspires positive values and fosters peace, love and communal harmony which are increasingly under threat today,” he observed.

The programme also included a talk by veteran Hagaluvésha (daytime theatre) artist Shivanna Moti who shared his experiences and insights from the field.

Folk artist Shruti Shilpi Ramayya, a recipient of the Karnataka Janapada Academy award, presented Ekatari songs, adding a traditional flavour to the event.

Both Shivanna Moti and Shruti Shilpi Ramayya were honoured with the Rangaprashasti awards in recognition of their contributions to theatre and folk art.

Presiding over the programme, Rangayana director Sujatha Jangamashetti emphasised the relevance of theatre in contemporary times.

She said that theatre serves as a powerful medium for social transformation and enables new ideas and meaningful dialogue to reach people quickly.

World Theatre Day, observed globally on March 27, was celebrated with enthusiasm, reflecting the enduring significance of theatre as a cultural and social force, she added.
